ICAR-CIBA, Chennai celebrated the World Environment Day on 04 June 202. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. P. Krishnan, Director, BOBP-IGO said that India’s economy is projected to be USD 28 trillion by 2050, a whopping 10+ folds increase from present, and fisheries sector in general and brackishwater aquaculture in particular, would require to grow at much higher rate in order to sustain the contribution of the overall agricultural sector to the economy. In the light of the potential environmental threats, he highlighted the need for preparing a road map for the desired progression in the technology basket, species and energy mix and more importantly the regulatory framework to enable the sector to perform to its potential, without impacting the sensitive coastal ecosystems and livelihoods, as envisioned in the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and Aquaculture. Dr. K.P. Jithendran, Director, ICAR-CIBA delivered the presidential address on the occasion.
